Ad Hominem vs. Guilt by Association

Ad hominem attacks a person's own traits; guilt by association transfers a negative judgment from someone or something connected to that person.

Side by side

Question Ad Hominem Guilt by Association
Target The speaker's own trait or character The speaker's connection to another person or group
Example Your plan is wrong because you are lazy. Your plan is wrong because someone unpopular agrees with it.
Relevance test Does the trait bear on the evidence or credibility? Does the relationship show participation, influence, or conflict?
Repair Evaluate the argument itself, not the person Evaluate the claim on its merits, not the connection

Which one is it?

Fits Ad Hominem

"Do not trust her budget plan; she is disorganized." The attack targets her own trait.

Fits Guilt by Association

"Do not trust his budget plan; his friend once overspent." The attack travels through a connection.

Could fit both

"You are dishonest, and you spend time with dishonest people, so your evidence does not matter." This mixes a direct personal attack with an association-based one.

Fits neither

A relevant conflict-of-interest disclosure followed by an independent check of the evidence.

A decision path

  1. Was the argument itself addressed at all?
  2. Is the attack aimed at the person's own trait or at a connection?
  3. Is that trait or connection relevant to the claim?
  4. Would independent evidence settle the question?
